About the artist
Nina Vandeweghe’s werk omvat zowel tekeningen, als schilderijen. Ze bouwt haar werelden intuïtief op. Dit universum wordt bewoond door tal van groteske figuren: dieren, mensen, spullen, die in een chaotisch, maar niet willekeurig tafereel worden geplaatst. Haar figuren zijn aandoenlijke wezens, melancholische anti-helden met hoekige schouders en te lange ledematen.
Vaak gebruikt ze een stukje tekst, een zin, een woord als vertrekpunt om een beeld op te bouwen. Deze ‘geplukte woorden’ verliezen al schilderend en tekenend hun oorspronkelijke betekenis en dienen louter als inspiratie om tot iets nieuw te komen.
Nina Vandeweghe woont en werkt in Brussel.

Ik koos voor dit houtblok omdat het oog me deed denken aan die typische afbeeldingen waarbij geschreven staat, ‘God ziet u’. Ik hou van iconografische en symbolische afbeeldingen. Bij het ontwerpen richtte ik me vooral op het grafische en het symbolische aspect. Ik wilde het motief eerder speels uitwerken dus zocht ik naar een link en kwam uit bij het spelletje ‘Ik zie ik zie wat jij niet ziet.’ of ‘I spy with my little eye’, in het Engels.
